루이스 쌔커는 미국에서 가장 인기 있는 동화 작가 중 한 사람이다. 1954년 미국 뉴욕에서 태어났으며 대학생 시절 초등학교 보조 교사로 일한 경험을 살려 쓴 '웨이싸이드 학교' 시리즈로 잘 알려져있다. 또한 1999년 뉴베리 상을 수상한 작품 『구덩이』를 비롯하여 ‘웨이싸이드 학교’ 씨리즈와 『못 믿겠다고?』 『개는 농담을 하지 않는다』 , '마빈 레드포스트' 시리즈 등 20여 권의 어린이책을 썼다. 그가 미국 아동문학에서 차지하는 비중은 그의 개인사와 작품 세계를 다룬 책 『Louis Sachar』(Greene, Meg, Rosen Pub Group 2003)가 출판된 것만 봐도 알 수 있을 정도이다. 그는 현재 텍사스에서 딸과 그리고 학교 컨설턴트인 아내와 함께 살고 있다.
